ORIGIN OF MOTHER'S DAY
The second Sunday in May has been set aside in honor of motherhood. Many churches have special services in which they honor Mothers of the congregation. They usually present the oldest Mom, youngest Mom, and Mom with the most children a corsage.
There is a custom of wearing a carnation on Mother's Day. A colored carnation means that the person's Mother is living. A white carnation indicates that a person's mom is dead.
Years ago, England observed what they called Mothering Sunday. It came in Mid-Lent.
The first suggestion for a day set aside to honor Mothers was made by Julia Ward Howe. She suggested that it be observed on June 2, as a day dedicated to peace.
Julia was born in 1819 in New York to a prominent family. She was an American writer, lecturer, and reformer. She was known as one of the most famous women of her time. She wrote "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", which was inspired when she visited military camps in Washington, D.C., during the Civil War in 1861. It became the major war song of the Union forces.
Julia became interested in the women's movement. She became the first president of the New England Woman Sufferage Association.
Three years after Frank Hering of Indiana launched his campagin for observance of Mother's Day in 1904, Anna Jarvis began a campaign to a nationwide obervance of Mother's Day. She chose the second Sunday in May. She also began the custom of wearing the carnation.
Jarvis' own Mother was honored on the first service at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton,West Virginia, on May 10, 1908. Later, at the general assembly in 1912, a delegate from Andrews Church introduced a resolution recognizing Jarvis as the founder of Mother's Day, and suggested that Mother's Day be observed on the second Sunday in May.
President Woodrow Wilson signed a joint resolution in Congress on May 9, 1914, recommending that the federal government observe Mother's day. The next year, the president was authorized to proclaim an annual holiday.

Learn more about Mauricio de Sousa

Do you know Mauricio de Sousa? Let's learn something about him.

Mauricio de Sousa was born in Santa Isabel on October 27, 1935. His father, Antonio Maurício de Sousa, was a poet, and his mother, Petronilha Araújo de Sousa, also delved into poetry. Mauricio developed an interest in cartooning at a young age, and began to draw posters and illustrations for periodicals.
Today, he is the father of ten children, and drew inspiration from them for new characters such as Monica, Maggy, Marina, Mary Angela. Nimbus and Nick Nope. Three of his children are even employed at his studio: Mônica handles licensing duties, Magali works as a scriptwriter, and Marina is a storyline developer.
The comics of Mauricio de Sousa have gained international fame, been featured on licensed merchandise, and have even been adapted for movies, television, video games, and even a São Paulo amusement park, the Parque da Mônica ("Monica's Park"). Two other Parque da Mônica facilities were also located in Curitiba and Rio de Janeiro, but they both closed in 2000 and 2005, respectively.
From 1970 to 1986, Mauricio's comic books had been published by Editora Abril, until Globo took over in January 1987. His work has been published in many magazines and newspapers since 1959. Since January 2007, the comic book series is published by Panini Comics.
In 1997, the cartoonist founded the Mauricio de Sousa Cultural Institute, whose mandate is to develop social action campaigns that translate serious subjects into a comic book format to appeal to both young and adult readers.
Mauricio's public service work has earned him international recognition. Among the honors he has received are a Brazilian presidential medal of honor for his promotion of human rights; an honorary doctorate in public service from La Roche College of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Brazilian International Press Association.
In 2008, Mauricio started publishing Turma da Mônica Jovem ("Monica Teen"), an offshoot series from "Monica's Gang", featuring Monica and her friends now as teenagers, adopting black-and-white pages, as well as art style heavily influenced from manga. Issue #34 of the "Monica Teen" comic book, presenting the first real kiss between Monica and Jimmy (they had already kissed in two previous occasions, but in a different context) had 500,000 sales.
In 2011 he was honored in the seventh edition of the Festival Internacional de Quadrinhos, at Belo Horizonte.
In 2012, Mauricio will publish a two-issue story arc in the Monica Teen comic book featuring some of Osamu Tezuka's main characters, such as Astro, Sapphire and Kimba, joining Monica and her friends in an adventure in the Amazon Rainforest against a smuggling organization chopping down hundreds of trees in the jungles of the Amazon. This is the first time that Tezuka Productions Co. has allowed overseas animators to use Tezuka’s characters. Rock Holmes, another character created by Tezuka, will apparently be featured as a villain in the story arc.

Now! Have fun!

10 tips to learn English

Read some tips to learn English easily:

Dica 1

Seja claro a respeito do porquê você estuda inglês.

Dica 6

Real in Rio

Check this famous video about the movie "Rio"! The lyric is below. You can sing and see the translation!

Real In Rio

All the birds have a feather.
Do what we love most of all
We are the best at rhythm and laughter
That's why we love carnaval

All birds we can sing to
Sun and beaches they call
Dance to the music, passion and love
Show us the best you can do

Everyone here is on fire
Get up and join in the fun
Dance with a stranger, romance and danger
Magic could happen for real, in Rio
All by it self (it self)
You can't see it coming
You can't find it anywhere else (anywhere else)
It's real, in Rio
Know something else (something else)
You can feel it happen
You can feel it all by yourself

All the birds have a feather
Do what we love most of all
Moon and the stars, sun and guitars
That's why we love carnaval

Loving our life in the jungle
Everything's wild and free
Never alone, 'cause this is our home
Magic can happen for real, in Rio
All by it self (by it self)
You can't see it coming
You can't find it anywhere else

I'm a kako wero kinga kinga kinga kinga
Birds like me, 'cause I'm a hot winga (there's your hota winga)

Here everybody loves samba (I like the Samba)
Rhythm you feel in you heart (I'm the Samba master)
Beauty and love, what more could you want
Everything can be for real, in Rio
Here's something else (something else)
You just feel it happening
You won't find it anywhere else.

No Rio Real

Todas as aves têm penas

Sol e praias eles dizem

É real, no Rio

Lua e as estrelas,sol e violões

Aqui outra coisa acontece
